Culturally Relevant Non-Nuclear Family Housing
As those within the Housing sector recognize challenges of childcare and seniors housing, we can look to innovative modern solutions. I feel, however, that modernity will push us further from the solution.
Modern housing is applicable for nuclear families for parents or guardians and children. This structure is ethnocentric to the family makeup of settler families and not reflective of cultural differences that may, in fact, be the solution to current challenges.
If units were created that are malleable to the unique needs of families that extend to close friends, extended relatives, and grandparents, informal support would be strengthened by housing organizations. This alternative to current family housing would assist the population in a multitude of different ways.
For those experiencing addictions, living with those that are trusted and supportive will reduce the incidence of overdose as persons will not be in isolation while using.
For those at risk of self-harm and suicidal idealizations or intentions, reliance on systems of intervention would be reduced as persons would have the ability to be monitored and supported in their home by people personally connected to the individual.
For families in need of childcare, extended family would provide the service within the home rather than using services outside that may not be culturally appropriate for the children This would return cultural education to populations that may have previously been robbed of such opportunities due to discriminatory policies.
For seniors, staying in the home is a priority as well as the reduction of isolation. The combination of family and seniors housing would provide opportunities to reduce isolation and monitor the health of the individual by their family.
Please follow this conversation and edit or add ideas. I would also like to know where such systems are already implemented.
